Fashion Timeline History of Vietnamese Clothing (and Ao Dai).

A few of my refs here.

I love historical clothing and seeing how it evolves. I’ve longed to see the evolution of Vietnamese clothing but always came up empty handed due to lack of information… until now. I owe a lot of the references to the documentary “Searching for Vietnamese Clothing” (which impressively took the filmmaker’ 3 decades to research) and the sources on the Internet. I created this timeline because as a visual person, I like to know how clothing changed by seeing it side by side.

I attempted to make a timeline with only primary references (i.e. paintings, sculptures, and photographs from that time period). I tried to stay true to the original sources’ as much as possible but I can’t say that this is completely accurate. A few art pieces were really hard to decipher (the sitting Buddhist statues in particular) and not being able to see them in person required me to take some educated guesses. I used my own color preferences with the statues that did not have color to reference from. Regrettably I had to skip a few early dynasties because artifacts of those eras seem to have been lost to time or too stylized.

Continually a work in progress and more may be added.

Artist Observations:

*Due to approximately 1,000 years of various periods of Chinese domination, the clothing inevitably shares qualities with Hanfu. Regardless, there are tell-tale differences. Dong Son Culture (fig. 1) is the time period before any Han influence takes place.

* The colors and textile in Fig. 1 is largely hypothetical. I have a feeling that the Dong Son culture resembles the ethnic tribes still in VN and took inspiration from there. The pattern on her yellow sash thingy (words fail me, bah) came from an Ao Dai which coincidentally had a pattern that came from a Dong Son drum. Coming full circle here. Lol.

* On average, people wore 3-5 layers of clothing. The climate could be cold (e.g. the Northern regions) and 16-18th century scarves and gloves have been excavated. [link]

* Sleeves could reach to 40cm and were typically the length of chin to waist in the Le Dynasty.

* Skirts were banned in 1826 as they were deemed to be “unseemly”. Not all women followed suit as it was easier to work in skirts than pants.

* Buttoned up collars and buttoned clothing does not seem to appear until the 19th century (perhaps late 18th century at the earliest). Interestingly this change seems to coincide with the advent of French Imperialism/Colonization. Collars started rather low but gradually got higher and closer together.

* The Ao Tu Than (Fig. 9, 10 and 12) is still around today but as it stopped evolving in the 20th century I decided to concentrate on the Ao Dai (long shirt).

* The conical rice hat was originally worn by men (which can be seen in many photographs with Nguyen dynasty soldiers) and only became part of women’s wear sometime in the 20th century.

* Le Dynasty wins for being the most stylish and varied. IMO.

ing Olorun, Eledumare, Eleda and

Olofin-Orun). This religion has found its way throughout the world and is now expressed in practices as varied as Candomblé, Lucumí/Santería, Shango in Trinidad, Anago and Oyotunji, as well as in some aspects of Umbanda, Winti, Obeah, Vodun and a host of others.

These varieties or spiritual lineages are practiced throughout areas of Nigeria, the Republic of Benin, Togo, Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, Uruguay and Venezuela among others. As interest in Yoruba religion system grows, Orisha communities and lineages can be found in parts of Europe and Asia as well. While estimates may vary, some scholars believe that there could be more than 150 million adherents of this spiritual tradition worldwide.

You know, I’m not a fan of Batgirl right now. It has less to do with Gail Simone specifically and more to do with Babs’ demotion. She isn’t a leader. She isn’t a woman. She’s a girl stuck in a sidekick role forever, never…

And you didn’t know this poster beforehand, right? I will stand by what I said here. I guarantee I didn’t say that about Barbara’s interest in Criminology. I know for a fact I never said she wasn’t allowed to grow up. People say negative things about my work in lines all the time. Sometimes they are very aggressive. Sometimes they can be condescending. Sometimes they are perfectly nice. I am not going to try to talk them out of their opinions. I think that is obnoxious. It takes a great deal for me to be even marginally rude to a reader. If this occurred, I strongly, strongly suspect there were other factors. Everyone makes themselves a hero in the retelling of stories. But since I know for a fact I didn’t say two of the things I am accused of, I remain suspicious. If the op wants to dm me and remind me of the circumstances so I can try to remember them specifically, I am all up for that. A privately sent photo might be helpful. But I did not say those two things, so that makesme question the post.

If everyone tries to make themselves look like a hero, doesn’t that apply to you as well? For all we know you’re just saying you never said something to protect your own reputation. I’m not trying to be rude, I was just pointing this out.

I try to make it point not to step into online conversations like this, but I was manning the booth beside Gail Simone for the entire duration of ECCC, and she was incredibly friendly, open, and attentive the entire time despite her insanely busy schedule. Even if this conversation went as presented, I think it’s incredibly unfair, a bit selfish, and honestly discouraging (as far as con etiquette goes) to assume that Gail was ‘cold’ or ‘dismissive’ because of the questions asked rather than distracted or tired, as one often gets at conventions.

As a third party reading this, from the original poster’s phrasing I get the strong impression that Gail is being attacked for being human rather than a perpetually friendly customer service answerbot. It is not a creator’s job to provide that service, and the fact that Gail consistently goes out of her way to encourage and interact with her fans (and non-fans: I’d never read anything she’d written before ECCC) is a strong testament to her character.

Monster Mash is an illustration anthology that I would like to make containing humorous illustrations of classic monsters doing everyday things. Such as a Dracula Dentist or a Frankenstein cowboy. It will contain the talents of many different artists.

I thought this would be a really adorable project to put together. I was originally only going to have a certain number of artists, but quite a few are interested! I’m going to just see how many submissions I get by the deadline. If interest spikes, like it has been, I will be announcing some more info about things that I have planned in the coming weeks.

Rules:
- Must be an existing monster.
- Keep them classic. If you have questions regarding this, ask me!
- The content of your illustration should be reasonable.

Submission Guidelines:
- Create an illustration of a classic monster doing an everyday activity. Make it as silly as you like.
- Feel free to do you own take on the monster, as long as you keep it recognisable as that monster.
- Make sure the image is 300 DPI when you send it to me.
- Images should be grayscale. You can do a lot with grayscale/black & white. Ziptone it, inkwash, whatever as long as it doesn’t have color.
- FINISH your artwork that you are submitting.
- Before you get started, make sure you let me know which monster you are doing. I’m only allowing a certain number for each monster. Get creative with the one you pick!

- Make sure you have your name and a link to your art blog/website in your submission email.
- Deadline is December 15, 2012

Sloane mentioned gutterpunk skiffy Sailor Moon on twitter yesterday and I couldn’t get it out of my head so here’s a warmup sketch of Saturn. Turned out a little Tsutomu Nihei.
